Case Study: Volt, Aura, and Forte Apartments

New Zealand · 774 lots

The problem

Across all three buildings, similar issues were causing unnecessary cost and inefficiency: ageing or failing metering systems, manual reads for hot and cold water, no individual accountability with all costs shared via body corporate levies, frequent billing disputes, no visibility into leaks or high usage, rising Watercare (Auckland's water utility) and gas charges, and significant administrative workload.

What we did

Smart Metering delivered a unified upgrade across all three complexes. Advanced metering hardware: ultrasonic smart meters for hot and cold water with highly accurate low-flow measurement. Reliable connectivity: building-wide wireless coverage with automated daily reads sent securely to the cloud platform. Resident tools: an online portal for usage insights, invoices, payments and account management. Billing and administration: Smart Metering manages Watercare charges directly, with optional hot water and gas billing when required. Fully managed delivery: site planning, plumbing access coordination, installation and configuration, platform setup and resident onboarding.

The outcome

Nearly 800 households upgraded, over 1,600 ultrasonic smart meters installed in the quarter, fair user-pays billing in place, and real-time consumption data for every unit. Property managers now have a fully automated, zero-admin solution. For managers and bodies corporate: no manual reads or access coordination, accurate transparent billing, and reduced disputes and admin overhead. For residents: pay only for what they use, clear insight into daily consumption and reduced waste through awareness. For sustainability and operations: real-time leak detection prevents water loss, the infrastructure is scalable and future-proof, and it supports long-term conservation.
